Diabetic Checks
We have a specialist diabetic nurse. All Diabetic patients should attend the surgery annually for a full diabetic check (even if they are being see in secondary care also). Diabetic checks last 30 minutes.
Asthma / COPD Checks
Our Chronic Disease Nuse is trained in the management of Asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease). All asthma and COPD patients should attend the surgery annually for a full check.
NHS Health Checks
Currently NHS Health Checks have been suspended by NHS. Please check back at a later date to see if they have been reinstated.
4YP For Young People
Helios Medical Centre are part of the 4YP program which is aimed at giving easy access to a doctor or nurse for patients between 13 - 24 who wish to discuss any matters in confidence with a clinician. If you are a young person wishing to see a doctor or nurse about anything from sexual health to bullying and everything in between, please call the reception team and quote “4YP” any information you give will be in strict confidence.
Flu/Pneumo/Shingles
Annually, during October we run a programme to vaccinate patients against influenza. All patients over 65 or in the 'at risk' categories are eligible for immunisation. The categories are
- Respiratory Disease including Asthma
- Diabetes
- Heart Disease
- Renal Failure.
- Children aged 2-4 (Nasal spray)
If you are over 65 you will also be eligible for a Pneumovax Immunisation (if you have not had this previously and they last 10 years). Please mention this to the receptionists when you telephone us to make your appointment.
If you are aged 78 or 79 you are also entitled to a Shingles Vaccination.
Minor Surgery
We are currently unable to offer Minor Surgery at Helios - Patients wishing to be seen privately can call GP Care on 0333 332 2107 for an appointment in Bristol or visit http://www.gpcare.org.uk/site/privatepatients/ppsurgical/
Weight Management
Our treatment room health care assistant has been trained in weight management and offers appointments to help patients lose weight or can make a referral to a local group.

Health Visitor/District Nurse/Midwife
Health Visitor
The Health Visitor who is linked closely to the practice is a qualified nurse with special training in child health, health promotion and health education. She is based at Shirehampton Health Centre and works with families and all age groups, offering home visits and group work i.e. parent and baby support group, baby massage, positive parenting groups and smoking cessation advice for all. District Nurses
These nurses work closely with the doctor to provide nursing care at home when it is needed. Messages can be passed on to them via the practice receptionist, or they can be contacted at the Shirehampton Health Centre. Tel. No.: 0117 916 2200
Midwife
The antenatal clinic is held on Friday mornings. The midwife team provides antenatal care, postnatal care, carries out home births and deliveries in hospital.
